Welcome to my class!

This is going to be an exciting year for our class.  We are officially 2C and we are Hoban's Happy Hippos!  My motto is, "A happy, bright, and fun classroom cannot fail to produce a love of coming to school, and most importantly, a love of learning!"

Students!  (Otherwise known as Mrs. Hoban's Happy Hippos!)

The reason you are my happy hippos if that you are going to have the greatest 2nd grade year you could ever dream of.  The key to it being great though is this:
1.  Come to school every day ready to learn and enjoy it!
2.  Get to bed on time the night before so you are not tired!
3.  Trust that everything I ask you to do in class or for homework is to make sure you are the most successful 2nd grade students that ever came through St. John Neumann School!
4.  Read every book you get a chance to in our reading corner!  And check out every book you can from the Media Center.  Read, Read, Read, Read, and Read some more!  Reading will make you smarter than anything else you will every do!  I promise.

Events and Announcements
Updated 6/18/07

I have already planned our first field trip!  We are going to the Zoo!!!!  Where else would we go when we are Hoban's Happy Hippos?  We are going on Friday, September 7th.  We will check the weather forecast for 2 weeks before we go!  I am sure the weather will be beautiful.  We will wear our P.E. uniforms, bring a sack lunch with a cold drink.  (We will have coolers for the lunches and drinks.)  The great news is that we can take as many chaperones as would like to go, so tell your parents to check their calendars.  I will be sending home an announcement the first week of school with details.  But in the meantime, look forward to seeing some REAL happy  hippos!

Don't forget Book Day on August 13th.  You do not have to wear your uniform.  I will get to meet you and your family that brings you.  I will give you your text books to cover with contact paper and tell you some really fun activities that we will be doing all year long.  I can't wait to meet you!

In the News

Never worry about school. Relax!

Image this when you get worried.

The first book we are going to read is, Wagon Wheels by Brenner.  You are going to love it.  We will be reading it as part of our Social Studies class.  If you would like to get a copy from the library before school starts, that is fine with me.  I read this book at least 50 times to my children when they were about 2nd grade age. If you don't get a copy before school starts, do not worry about it.  We will have plenty of copies for everyone!

The second book we will read together is The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry.  Again, you are going to love it and if you want to read it ahead of time, no problem.  I want you to get a sneak peak of how much fun we are going to have reading books this year!

Here, I might put a weekly brain teaser, for example:

If there are 22 of us in this classroom, and I have 20 desks right now, how many more do I need to get from Mr. Zimmerman before the first day of school?

We will have a brain teaser each week.  I will post the last week's winner here, and the correct answer!
